Introducing the Arts Education for All Act

The National Art Education Association and our own state affiliate, NMAEA, support expanding opportunities for art education to fulfill human potential. NAEA President-elect, Dr. Wanda B. Knight , joins her colleagues in the Zoom call below to speak for our organization in support of the power of arts learning and the Arts Education for All Act. The AEAA was introduced recently by Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), Chair of the Education and Labor Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Human Services, and co-sponsored by New Mexico's own Representative Teresa Leger Fernandez (D-NM). YouTube video description: On Friday, October 15, Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), Chair of the Education and Labor Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Human Services, hosted a virtual rollout of her Arts Education for All Act, legislation that will address equity gaps in access to arts education for K-12 students and youth and adults in the justice system. The Arts Education for All Act has already been endorsed by over 100 national, state, and local organizations, including Americans for the Arts, National Association of Music Merchants, and Grantmakers for the Arts. Participants in the event included: Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici, Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, Josh Groban, Brooks Ashmanskas, Eddie Torres of Grantmakers in the Arts, Dr. Wanda Knight of the National Art Education Association, Mary Luehrsen of the NAMM Foundation, and students from the Northwest Children’s Theatre and Play it Forward. Information from the Americans for the Arts Action Fund: The Arts Education for All Act, the broadest arts education policy bill ever introduced in Congress, includes key provisions that will support and encourage the offering of arts education and programming experiences to Americans including our youngest learners, K-12 students, and youth impacted by the juvenile justice system. Crucially, the bill will also include provisions that would allow for rigorous arts and arts education research to be carried out, to further inform how elementary and secondary education in our country can be improved. To sign on in support of this bill as an individual or organization, visit this Americans for the Arts Action Fund page.
