Summer Art Institute for Talented High School Artists Engages Interest in Indigenous Art and Culture

The Oscar Howe Summer Art Institute is open to high schools students grades 10-12, with a demonstrated talent in the visual arts and strong interest in Indian art and culture. This is a FREE two week art institute on the campus of the University of South Dakota. The institute is limited to 20 high school students, who will participate in drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, cultural studies and art history classes.Participants are selected based upon an application , at least one letter of reference and a portfolio of their artwork. HOW TO APPLY All application materials are due by April 1, 2021. Registration form Parent/guardian permission form Portfolio of artwork, consisting of 10 images of the student's artwork. Preferred method is to send an email of the student’s work in jpg format to art@usd.edu . Letter of reference from an instructor, artist or other interested party, addressing why the nominee should be accepted into the institute.
