Programs

Each year the NMAEA Advisory Council plans programs to work toward our vision and mission for children, families, and educators. Members interested in leadership roles help shape these initiatives. All members may access these opportunities to further their professional growth and enhance their own art education programming.

New mexico Scholastic Art Awards

The New Mexico Art Education Association (NMAEA), in conjunction with the national Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, is proud to present the annual statewide New Mexico Scholastic Art Competition. This awards program continues to be the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S., and the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers.

Over 185,000 works of art and writing are annually submitted in numerous categories by teens in grades 7-12 nationwide. Each year more than 1,500 receive national awards and are celebrated on stage at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Youth Art Month History

Youth Art Month HistoryThe Art & Creative Materials Institute (ACMI) is an international association of more than 200 art, craft and creative material manufacturers seeking to promote safety in art and creative products through its certification program, which works to protect students, artists and creatives of all kinds pursuing their passion.

1961

ACMI created Children’s Art Month as an event to emphasize the value to children from participating in visual art education.

1969

The celebration expanded to include secondary school students, and the Children’s Art Month event officially became known as Youth Art Month.

1984

ACMI created the non-profit organization, The Council for Art Education (CFAE), to advocate for visual art education.  CFAE coordinates the Youth Art Month program at the national level.

Today

While Youth Art Month typically occurs in March, local and state events celebrating visual art education take place on almost a year round basis!  Events and fundraisers take place in schools, libraries, art centers, museums, and even state capitol buildings.
